Bernard Hoskin @ The Rose Inn
Mar 16 @ 20:00 – 23:00

Bernard Hoskin is a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist from Cambridge whose distinctive and original sound is based upon English song-writing and world music rhythms as well as the more common folk, country and blues styles. An experienced performer, he accompanies himself on 6 and 12 string guitars and mandolin playing a mixture of original and traditional songs and covers. He has produced twelve CDs.

He has opened up for many of the big names of the folk scene including Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy, Harvey Andrews, John Renbourn and Jacqui McShee, Clive Gregson, Andy Irvine, Phil Beer, Colvin Quarmby, Johnny Dickinson, Pete Atkin, June Tabor and the Oysterband, Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, Megson, Gigspanner, Henry Priestman, Greg Russell & Ciaran Algar, Carrivick Sisters, O’Hooley & Tidow, Tim Edey, Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, Blazin’ Fiddles, Wild Willy Barrett, Steve Tilston, Heidi Talbot.

Milkmaid Folk Club wrote of him: “Bernard treated us to a selection of his classic folksongs. All were delivered with consummate ease yet also with an unwavering passion and resolve as if it were their first public unveiling. His finger picking happily reminded me of some favourite guitarists who were playing in those crowded smoky clubs in the early 70s. His personal style of guitar work coupled with his friendly stage presence and lyrically engaging songs all made for an absorbing evening.”

“Bernard was terrific! Great voice, great songs, superb guitarist.” – Epping Folk Club

“A great night, everyone enjoyed it, lovely songs brilliantly performed and some lovely stories to go with them” – Bradford on Avon Folk Club

“Bernard Hoskin was brilliant last night, ranging from haunting self penned numbers to Steve Goodman (for those of us old enough to remember and young enough not to forget). An accomplished performer on guitar and mandola, he instantly connected with the audience.” – Owd Boots Folk Club, Nottingham

“an incredible singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist who has released nine albums to date and has supported many famous names, past and present, whilst simultaneously establishing himself as one of the finest male solo artists working in the contemporary folk music field today.” – Beverley Folk Club

“a popular troubadour with an accomplished and individual guitar style, well constructed songs, good stage presence and ambition” – Mardles Magazine

“Singer, songwriter and guitarist Bernard performs songs with the unhurried, slightly wistful, airy, summery feel of classic 60s folk singer-songwriters, creating a reflective, gentle and fundamentally positive space, which it was a treat to inhabit during his deservedly well-received set.” – Rychard Carrington, Slatethedisco.com

Becky Mills @ The Rose Inn
Apr 20 @ 20:00 – 23:00

Magical stories from the North York moors : Becky Mills time-travels through folklore, family, love & loss – weaving a keen wit and beautiful playing into a very English alt-folk show.
North Yorkshire solo singer-songwriter Becky Mills brings a uniquely personal and touching slant to the modern folk genre.

Listeners and audiences have characterised her touching, witty and evocative songs as “uplifting”, “heart-rending” and “sung from the heart”, and after 20 years on the circuit (including gigs at Glastonbury, Trowbridge and Cambridge festivals) she is a firm favourite with audiences large and small.

A close collaborator with Fairport Convention founder Ashley Hutchings, Becky has also worked with Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Barbara Dickson and Ken Nicol, as well as being a former member of acclaimed all-girl ensemble Waking The Witch. In 2013 she released her acclaimed solo debut album, “Dandelion”.

In 2019 she released her new album, “Tall Tales and Home Truths”. Cut through with the superstitions, folklores and mysteries of the North Yorkshire moors she calls home, the album mines her family’s past to bring astonishing real-life stories to the listener’s attention. Myths, community tales, bonds and travails, all rooted in a magical sense of place, where the wild moors suddenly meet the sea and the promise of a potentially different life beyond…

“A storyteller of immense talent and imagination” – FATEA Magazine

“A collection of warm humanity & emotional truth, written and sung by an exceptional storyteller” – Oz Hardwick, RnR Magazine (****)

“I don’t remember when I was so amazed at a singer-songwriter’s work … she sings from the soul,” – Mike Harding.

“I couldn’t take it off of the CD player. Cracking songs, lovely stories – just beautiful things” – Genevieve Tudor, BBC Radio Shropshire

Linde Nijland sings Sandy Denny @ The Rose Inn
May 18 @ 20:00 – 23:00

Linde Nijland has been performing for many years, first as part of well known harmony singing duo Ygdrassil till 2007 -, lately as a successful folk singer and songwriter. In recent years she has been working closely together with multi-instrumentalist Bert Ridderbos (guitars, banjo, cittern, accordion).

Linde has made 10 albums and 2 DVDs and tours all over Europe with her crystal clear voice and captivating performance. She has received high acclaim for her renditions of songs by the late Sandy Denny, her all time favuorite singer.

Joe Boyd (former producer of Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Pink Floyd) said about her album: ‘Linde Nijland has given Sandy Denny’s music the respect it deserves, and made a lovely and fresh record that shows off her beautiful voice as well as her good taste’. July 2009 he invited her to be part of an All Star Fairport Convention reunion concert in the Barbican Hall in London (with i.e. Richard Thompson). In 2014 Linde sang guest vocals during Fairport Convention’s Dutch tour. Linde was also part of the BBC Radio 2 documentary about Sandy Denny by Bob Harris in 2008.

Apart from her albums with Ygdrassil and “Linde Nijland sings Sandy Denny” Linde has made a Dutch album, the poetic ‘Visman’ and an album with winter songs. In 2011 a DVD / CD of Linde’s adventurous musical journey to Bhutan in 2008 was released (see Dutch article NRC Handelsblad below). It showed intriguing performances by Linde and Bert Ridderbos in Serbia, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India and Bhutan, partly together with local traditional musicians.

An animated music video for Linde’s song ‘Traveller’ made by Iranian artist Sam Chegini won awards at international film festivals in Canada and the US. In 2014 Linde’s intimate new album ‘I Am Here’ was released and accordingly pop magazine Heaven called her the “best folk singer of The Netherlands”. In 2015 Linde performed with artists like Iain Matthews and Fred Piek and successfully did 3 one-off reunion concerts with Ygdrassil. Autumn 2017 Linde’s new album The Jukebox Project has been released.

LocTup Together @ The Rose Inn
Jun 16 @ 20:00 – 23:00

Chris Lock and Ian Tupling first met 27 years ago and have been on one long musical adventure ever since.

Their musical career started by singing together casually in local folk clubs and they’ve not stopped singing since!

Interest in their vocal style and sense of fun resulted in appearances at numerous festivals throughout the UK from 1993 to the present day.

In 2003 they joined forces with two friends from the North East of England which saw the formation of the close harmony acapella group “Four ‘n’ Aft. The result of this union led to appearances at festivals throughout mainland Europe both as LocTup Together and as part of the larger group.

LocTup Together’s repertoire is quite varied and encompasses both traditional and contemporary songs, some self-penned and a few humorous ones thrown in for good measure, however, over the years they have developed a deep interest in and love of maritime songs in the broader sense, This has taken the form of mainly sea songs that tell stories, with the odd shanty thrown in.

It is this interest in maritime-themed songs that has taken them to festivals all over Europe.  They have performed in Poland, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Ireland, the Channel Islands, Norway and the Åland Islands (Finland) plus festivals in the UK.

LocTup Together’s concert sets are delivered with powerful voices working in close harmony, sometimes with subtle guitar accompaniment. Although they take their music seriously their zany, self-deprecating, sense of humour is never far away. Their aim is always to make the audience feel as though they are in a friendly comfortable atmosphere.
