Dear artists

We welcome approaches from you asking if you can play at the club. It would be appreciated if you could read the notes here,  and then check available dates below, (TBA is a bit of a hint) before contacting us.

Please note that all club meetings in future will be acoustic, ie, no PA will be provided. You are free to bring your own, of course.

Looma @ The Rose Inn
Sep 21 @ 20:00 – 23:00

Three parts English, one part Orkney, Looma plays acoustic roots and folk music from the swamps of Louisiana to the Swedish midnight sun, and everywhere in between.

Bringing together folk, blues, Cajun, bluegrass and country traditions, as well as original songs, Looma mix driving energy with strong vocals and foot-tapping tunes.

Looma are:

Liz Logie  Piano Accordion and percussion
Mark Theobald  Harmonica, Ukelele, Vocals
Bob Gilmour-Evans  Guitar, Vocals
Tim Garland Cittern  Fiddle, Vocals

Liz is an Orcadian who has played the accordion since she was ten, being inspired to play by her father, who was a well-known Orkney accordion player.
Mark was a National Harmonica League ‘Player of the Year’ in 2013 and 2014, playing Irish and blues music.

Bob has been performing and writing songs since his youth but feels he is now moving into his prime years. He has recorded several albums and many other artists have covered his songs.

Tim has been performing traditional and self-penned material for over thirty years, both as a founder member of Midlands-based radical folk group Fieldwork and with Kasutima Ceilidh band, playing nationally at clubs, festivals and on national and local radio. He has also performed regularly as a solo artist and in a duo with Indian percussionist Nitin Odedra. He has made five albums with Fieldwork and two solo albums.

Red Shoes @ The Rose Inn
Oct 19 @ 20:00 – 23:00

Soaring, passionate vocals, chiming acoustic guitars and a superb catalogue of original songs in the Folk/Roots/Americana vein written by Carolyn and Mark Evans lie at the heart of the Red Shoes success story. They have become a live favourite on the Folk Club, Theatre and Festival circuit.

Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention/Jethro Tull) produced the album “Ring Around the Land” and went on to record his version of Carolyn and Mark’s song “Celtic Moon” for Fairport Convention’s “Festival Bell” CD.

Red Shoes follow up, “All The Good Friends” produced by Mick Dolan (Show of Hands, Traffic, Fisherman’s Friends) gained 5 star reviews in the music press.

“It Isn’t Over Yet” their third release was awarded “Band Album of 2017” by FolkWords and hailed as “A Classic!” by FATEA Magazine

Currently touring as a guitar based trio, they have shared stages with The Strawbs; Fotheringay; Iain Matthews; Pentangle; Show of Hands, Richard Digance, Steve Knightley, Fairport Convention, Los Pacaminos.

Sandy Denny-era Fairports and the contemporary American country-folk of Lucinda Williams sewn together neatly in these well crafted songs – SHINDIG

The Angels want to hear these Red Shoes – Maverick

Many years ago I had the good fortune to see Sandy Denny fronting Fairport Convention on several occasions. Red Shoes front-woman Carolyn Evans has the same kind of strong but fragile voice – Blues Matters

Acoustic gems with splashes of rocking country fire. The trio of Red Shoes make a comfortable, timeless sound and open a window into small town nostalgia, regret and real lives lived – Northern Sky

Kim Lowings @ The Rose Inn
Mar 15 @ 20:00 – 23:00

British Folk singer and songwriter Kim Lowings currently lives in Gloucestershire. Born and raised in the West Midlands, Kim has built up a national reputation with its roots at the centre of the country.

She is perhaps best known for her work with The Greenwood and ‘folk supergroup’ The Company Of Players. Using the piano, guitar and trademark mountain dulcimer, she sings songs of love, loss and rebellion; tales old and new. Each with a modern twist and a purpose.

Described as “beautiful and enchanting” by Living Tradition and “Absolutely captivating” R2 Magazine.

The John Richards Band @ The Rose Inn
May 17 @ 20:00 – 23:00

John Richards has been writing, and people have covered his songs, for nearly fifty years now. Robin Dransfield, Paul Downes and Phil Beer, Fairport Convention, Show of Hands, Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar, and Mike Silver have all recorded John’s songs over the years. He released a new CD not long before lockdown and finally has the chance to share some of the new songs.

This lineup has the wonderful vocals of John’s daughter Emma, the excellent fiddle and vocals of Emily Sanders and the outstanding musicianship of Jim Sutton on Double Bass and Keyboards with a collection of John’s songs old and new that you will probably be humming for days after the gig.
