Mean Mary, international touring singer, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist, is not really so mean—even Hank Williams Jr called her a “sweetheart.” But she IS infamous for her alluring story songs, incredible instrumental speed, & rich voice that can travel from deep emotion to sparkling trills.
She is also the award-winning author of three novels and a banjo music book.
Mean Mary started out life as a musical prodigy, could read music before she could read words, and co-wrote original songs at age five. By age seven she was proficient on the guitar, banjo, and violin, and entertained audiences across the US with her vocal and instrumental skills. Her life has been one long road show interspersed with TV, radio, and film work. She is also a prolific songwriter, book author, and the fun loving star of Nashville TV show, Never-Ending Street. Clarksville Mountain Band
The Clarksville Mountain Band were formed in 2005, and play well known songs in a Bluegrass, Hillbilly style. Pete Dunn on bass guitar and Steve Layton on acoustic guitar played together for many years in a 12-piece Latin-American band called Octaves, in which Steve was the founder member. They enjoyed success all over the world travelling as far as South America.
Richard Heath – vocal, mandolin, washboard and ukulele – was originally a drummer with Blues / Rock bands with some success; recording and working with people such as Jim Lea (Slade), Stevie Young (AC/DC), and Steve Gibbons. Richard mellowed slightly to join the Bushbury Mountain Daredevils for three years, with three successful albums. He then went on to form the Gravelly Hillbillies, playing their own type of skifflebilly, performing at many Folk and Blues festivals in the UK and abroad, and recording three successful albums.
With this wealth of experience, the Clarkesville Mountain Band guarantee an entertaining evening.

Double-Header Concert
As a special treat, we have brought together two wonderful folk acts.
Southwest Music Awards ‘Best Folk Act’ finalists 2013, Devonbird, have brought an exciting new sound to the Devon folk scene (and beyond) in recent months.
Devonbird – Kath Bird (singer/songwriter), supported by Sophia Colkin (aka Squeak) on violin and Andy Clarke on guitar and bouzouki, show their wide and versatile range and their passion for folk music, both original and traditional.
The trio combine foot-stomping jigs and reels with haunting ballads and songs, often having their origins in old Devonshire folklore and dialect.
The band has recently been described as having a clarity and purity of sound, vocally and instrumentally, which is both profoundly soul touching and magical.
Devonbird have been touring local folk clubs, are being seen at folk festivals and have appeared on national and local radio.
For their first studio recorded album, “Hangman’s Daughter”, they teamed up with well known folk producer Mark Tucker. The album is a mixture of hard hitting original songs such as The Brae, combined with such haunting folk songs as My Purty Jane, sung in the Devonshire Dialect.
“This week I popped down to the town of Cardigan to enjoy the Quay Festival. The day promised to combine the vibrancy of live bands with the local beautiful scenery to create a very special bank holiday weekend. Opening the afternoon’s events was Devonshire band Devon Bird, a three-piece from the West Country, who definitely brought a touch of folk to the town. Putting music to well known Devonshire poetry and singing tracks from their new album Hangman’s Daughter the female strong band with exception of male guitarist certainly wowed the crowd with album titled track Hangman’s Daughter finishing their unique set.” ~ Carmathen Journal
With their unique onstage-chemistry and their widely praised harmonies, the Anglo-German duo ‘Paul Walker & Karen Pfeiffer’ entertain and engage their audiences wherever they perform. Combining their original material with a fine choice of folk favourites Paul and Karen craft a show of “songs with groove and goosebumps guaranteed”, as the Stuttgart press put it recently. Karen’s voice, clear and yet so powerful, leaves audiences mesmerised. She adds with alto recorder, tin whistle and percussive instruments to Paul’s vocal and individual guitar style. In addition to their UK tours, these “two exceptional musicians” (Stuttgart press) have established a significant reputation in Ireland and Germany and therefore sometimes the odd German folk song, or even a German ‘joke’ will find its way into a “fantastically entertaining night” (Secret Sounds).
The duo hails from Staffordshire although Karen is originally from Stuttgart, Germany, where Paul ‘discovered’ her busking in a city centre park. He invited her to perform in England and the two of them have now been playing music together since 2012.
Sharing vocal duties, Paul Walker & Karen Pfeiffer have their individual styles which combine beautifully and, together with their light-hearted banter, they provide a truly memorable experience: “The likable, humorous style in which they treat their audience is also reflected in their own songs” (Ludwigsburger Zeitung), which they present along with a selection of classics from folk icons such as Richard Thompson, Dougie MacLean, Jimmy MacCarthy or Christy Moore. Known primarily for their exquisite harmonies, their lyrical and melodic song writing has begun to gain well-deserved attention.
Their most recent project was with producer Scott Ralph who re-recorded their acclaimed songs ‘Play Me A Love Song’ (set in a bar in Cologne) and ‘Lift This Weight’ (a homage to industrial Stoke-on-Trent) adding a string quartet (featuring Clare ‘Fluff’ Smith) and a colliery style brass band. Their CDs “One by One” (2013) and “Marble Town” (2015) have received glowing reviews in folk and music industry magazines (e.g. Acoustic Magazine, Folk North West) and have been played on BBC Radio Stoke, Radio Shropshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire as well as in various Folk Podcasts.
Currently Paul and Karen are spending time in the studio recording their third full album.
“It seems that there is nothing that this duo cannot bring into fruition with their own unique style and passion.” Secret Sounds (website)
“WOW! Paul Walker & Karen Pfeiffer did not disappoint, they gave us 110%, keeping us entertained with wonderful songs and great harmonies. They left us calling for more, and well deserved the standing ovation they received at the end. Look forward to their next visit” Brewood Acoustic Music Club (Facebook page)
